Thursdays, June 12 - July 31
Prof. Laurence Wiener, J.D., U.S. lawyer, currently residing and practicing in South America, with over 15 years experience managing and leading substantial business transactions between United States and Latin American parties.
Whether a full-time resident abroad or simply traveling to do deals and meet clients, the international lawyer faces numerous challenges. Differing and often conflicting rules govern conflicts of interest, confidentiality, privilege and other issues affecting attorneys working in more than one jurisdiction. In this course, participants will focus on the tasks of international practitioners as they relate to problem assessment and resolution, ethics, conflicts of interest, taking discovery, attorney-client privileges and aspects of client communication, unauthorized practice of law and attorney advertising. Whether or not you practice in another jurisdiction, this course will give insight on managing international business transactions and how to avoid pitfalls in communication, documentation and problem assessment.
