The Academy is an intensive professional development program on the law and policy of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Its purpose is to provide intensive examination of the legal obligations and policy underpinnings of the WTO and its agreements, in the context of how the WTO operates and how it relates to national governments. This non-degree program is designed to build global capacity to take advantage of the multilateral trading system, by training legal professionals, trade policy officials, members of the international business, IGO and NGO communities, academics, and others – including those from developing countries and transition economies. Academy speakers are international trade law experts, many of whom negotiated the WTO Agreements at issue.
The Academy is offered under the auspices of the Institute of International Economic Law at Georgetown Law. The Institute, and the Academy, were created, and are directed, by world-renowned WTO expert University Professor John H. Jackson.
