Sexual Orientation and the Law: Selected Topics in Civil Rights
Professors Mathew Nosanchuk and Alex Wagner J.D. Course 395 | 3 credit hours This survey course explores a wide range of legal issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identity. The issues we will address cut across numerous areas of legal doctrine, including criminal law, employment, family law, equal protection, privacy, and First Amendment law. The course considers how the legal system regulates and affects various aspects of the lives of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered individuals; we will address workplace issues, family relationships (including marriage, partnerships and parenting), and the interplay between law, politics, and policy as it relates to sexual orientation. The course will meld both legal theory and practical considerations, and therefore will draw on the experiences of several practitioners as course participants currently involved in shaping various aspects of LGBT law and policy. Strongly Recommended: Constitutional Law II: Individual Rights and Liberties. Students may not receive credit for both this course and Sexuality, Gender and the Law Seminar.
