Gender, Race and Criminal Law
Professor P. Butler J.D. Course 1021 (cross-listed) | 2 credit hours The course examines the role of race and gender in substantive criminal law and criminal procedure. Selected topics include rape, racial disparities, hate crimes, victimization, race and gender based defenses, including cultural defenses and the "battered spouse” defense, jury selection and participation, prostitution and sex crimes, and racial profiling. Readings will consist primarily of cases and scholarly articles. Possible case books include “Race and Races” (Thompson West) and “Women and the Law” (Thompson West). Selected readings from “Race, Crime, and the Law” (Kennedy) and “Let’s Get Free: A Hip-Hop Theory of Justice” (Butler). Students MAY take this course and Criminal Law.
