Great Philosophers on Law
Professor Ladislas Orsy J.D. Course 341 | 2 credit hours The understanding of the idea of “law” has changed a great deal in history, and so did the perception of “human rights and duties.” The course will survey the various philosophical schools from Antiquity to Modernity and examines their impact on legal philosophy. The lectures will be composed on the pattern of a dialogue with the principal thinkers and schools; they are Plato, Aristotle, Roman Lawyers, Jewish Writers, and Aquinas for Antiquity; Locke, Kant, Marx, and Positivists for Modernity. Readings from primary sources will be assigned week-by-week; for general background information the textbook is “A Short History Of Western Legal Theory” by J.M. Kelly.
