This seminar will analyze the relationship of law and society in various Latin American countries. The seminar seeks to study the common cultural, institutional and structural features that often make Latin American legal systems problematic such as problems of access to law, legal pluralism, non-compliance with the law, trust and legitimacy, enforcement and, violence.

The seminar will cover common features, problems and institutions that shape recent legal developments in Latin America today, such as the increasing importance of constitutional adjudication and strategic litigation. We will explore the recent transformations in both the way law operates and the way the law is understood and studied.

The seminar will be taught using qualitative and quantitative studies from different Latin American countries but will not require students to read in Spanish or Portuguese.
